About Fuerte de Guadalupe

Fort Guadalupe stands on top of Acueyametepec hill in the north-east of Puebla city, 928 m in a straight line from Fort Loreto. The two forts, declared national historic heritage, were the main stage of the Battle of Puebla and the siege of the city during the French Intervention, and today house museums.

On the west face of the hill a church of three naves and two towers dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe was built between 1804 and 1816. On 27 September 1813, to defend the city against the insurgents, the town council decided to build the Guadalupe redoubt, and in 1816 the intendant Ciriaco del Llano had the churches ringed with walls of stone and lime; at Guadalupe the hermitage was demolished and an underground vault and cistern were built. It is a small fort, with two bastions and a redan covering the entrance. In 1862 General Ignacio Zaragoza ordered the church towers pulled down to adapt the fort.

On 5 May 1862 the battle began at 11:15 am with a cannon shot fired from Fort Guadalupe, answered by the ringing of the city's bells. Zaragoza's Mexican army defeated the French under the Count of Lorencez, a victory that delayed the invasion. In 1863 the French came back with a larger army and shelled the forts into ruins. Today INAH's Fort Guadalupe Museum displays objects from both armies, and the hill gives a wide view over Puebla.
