About Cuanalá

San Mateo Cuanalá sits on the flat farmland between Huejotzingo and Cholula, at about 2,180 metres, and is the seat of the municipality of Juan C. Bonilla. Its Nahuatl name is usually read as "water where snakes are caught", built from coatl (snake), ana (to catch) and atl (water). The 2020 census counted 4,399 residents, and the village now lies inside the Puebla-Tlaxcala metropolitan area.

This was a Nahua settlement in the orbit of ancient Cholula. Franciscan friars oversaw the building of the church of San Mateo, still the main landmark of the village. In the 19th century Cuanalá belonged to the district of Cholula; on 7 September 1907 the municipality was created and named after Juan C. Bonilla, a soldier who fought the conservatives and the French intervention.

The land is almost level and mostly farmed: rain-fed maize, beans and alfalfa, with irrigated plots along the Metlapanapa river, a tributary of the Atoyac. Brick and roof-tile making is a local trade. The main feast is 21 September, Saint Matthew's day, with masses, a procession, fireworks and traditional dances, and on 1 and 2 November families set up altars and visit the cemetery. It is a short stop that pairs well with Cholula or Huejotzingo.

How to get to Cuanalá

Drive from Puebla: 25 min, 21 km

Puebla's zócalo is roughly 20 km and 25 minutes away: leave on the Recta a Cholula, cross the Periférico and follow federal highway MEX-150 (Avenida 12 Poniente in Cholula) north-west to the Cuanalá turn-off. Neighbouring Cholula, a Pueblo Mágico, is only about 9 km (10 minutes) back along that road. No bus line is documented; local transport runs from Cholula to the villages of Juan C. Bonilla, but ask locally before relying on it.
