About San Matías Tepetomatitlán

San Matías Tepetomatitlán sits at 2,328 metres above sea level in the municipality of Apetatitlán de Antonio Carvajal, in central Tlaxcala about 6 km east of the state capital. The 2020 census counted 3,273 residents, well up from 2,338 in 2010 and from the 423 recorded around 1900, which makes it the fourth-largest of the municipality's six localities. Its closest neighbour is Belén Atzitzimititlán, less than a kilometre to the east, and the municipal seat, Apetatitlán, is about 2 km in the same direction.

The name is Nahuatl: tepetomatl is the tepetomate, a tree of the genus Pseudolmedia, and titlan marks a surrounded place, so Tepetomatitlán is read as the place surrounded by tepetomates. Saint Matthias the Apostle is the patron who gave the village the first half of its name, and the Templo de San Matías is on the municipality's list of sights. Apetatitlán's published municipal fiestas are the Holy Cross (3 May), Saints Peter and Paul (29 June) and the Virgin of Guadalupe (12 December); no separate date is published for the feast of San Matías itself.

The climate is temperate highland: a mean of about 14.8 °C, January the coolest month and May the warmest, and roughly 684 mm of rain a year. To the west rise Loma San Matías (2,394 m), about 3 km away, and Cerro Ostol (2,474 m). Wikimedia Commons holds photographs of the widening of the Tlaxcala-Apizaco highway at the village and of a footbridge over it, which show the fast road running right alongside the settlement.
