About Cuauhtémoc

Cuauhtémoc, also called Colonia Cuauhtémoc, is a locality in the municipality of Huamantla, at 2,545 metres above sea level and about 5 km (approx.) west-northwest of the centre of the municipal seat. Its founding is dated 2 March 1938, barely two months after neighbouring Benito Juárez, and its name honours Cuauhtémoc, the last tlatoani of the Mexica empire.

The 2020 census counted 1,227 residents. Earlier censuses show a very regular progression: 221 in 1940, 306 in 1960, 499 in 1980, 825 in 2000 and 1,022 in 2010.

With no monuments of its own on record, a visit is built around Huamantla. Parque Juárez holds the Museo Nacional del Títere, in an 18th-century mansion, and the Palacio Municipal, with Desiderio Hernández Xochitiotzin's mural on the founding of the town and a relief replica of the Códice de Huamantla. Farther out, La Malinche National Park, decreed in 1938, the same year Cuauhtémoc was founded, offers trails, camping areas and cabins.
