About San Pedro Xochiteotla
San Pedro Xochiteotla is a locality in Chiautempan municipality, at about 2,450 metres above sea level on the slopes of La Malinche. It borders San Rafael Tepatlaxco to the east, San José Aztatla to the north, Guadalupe Ixcotla and San Bartolomé Cuahuixmatlac to the south, and Santa Cruz Guadalupe and San Miguel Xaltipan to the west. In 2020 it had 2,868 people in 662 homes, up from 2,421 in 2010.
The name is attributed to Nahuatl xóchitl, flower, and teotl, and is usually rendered as "flower of the afternoon". In the late 19th century the place was known as Paintla and later as Xochiteotlac. Local tradition says two elderly kings asked the priests of Tizatlán for leave to settle here, that two banners about 1.80 m long, one gold and one silver, are kept at the Chiautempan municipal offices, and that a poem by Nezahualcóyotl was inspired by this spot.
There are two churches and a chapel: Mass was first said in the chapel, then in the old church and now in a new, large temple that is still unfinished and belongs to the parish of Guadalupe Ixcotla. Before industry arrived, weaving blankets on wooden looms was the main occupation; today some sewing workshops remain and many people work in Chiautempan, Apizaco, Tlaxcala or Puebla. Maize, squash and beans are grown, pigs, poultry and cattle are raised, and the village has well-known bonesetters.
