Town 24 km southeast of Cosalá
A remote old mining town in the sierra with an aged church and narrow streets, reached by a long dirt road from Cosalá.
Guadalupe de los Reyes is an old mining town deep in the hills south-east of Cosalá, and one of the best-preserved reminders of the mining wealth that once made this corner of Sinaloa so rich. Spanish settlers began working the mines around it in the colonial period, and in the late 1800s an underground gold mine opened here that became the most important source of gold in the whole district. It kept working until 1943, when it closed during the Second World War.
Today it is a quiet place whose winding streets and narrow alleys are lined with buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries, and an old church stands at its heart. Walking through it feels like stepping back into the Cosalá of the mining boom, without the restorations and the crowds.
The trip is part of the appeal: the town is reached by a long dirt road through the sierra, so it sees few visitors and keeps a quiet, out-of-time atmosphere.
