Town 10 km east of El Fuerte
A Yoreme (Mayo) ceremonial village east of El Fuerte where visitors can learn about the culture, see traditional dances, and eat handmade tortillas.
Los Capomos is a Yoreme (Mayo) village in the farmland east of El Fuerte, and one of the main ceremonial centers of the Yoreme people in the municipality, alongside places like Tehueco, Mochicahui, and Jahuara. About 15 percent of El Fuerte's population is Yoreme, living in dozens of mostly Mayo communities, and Capomos is one of the easiest of them for visitors to get to know.
The village takes part in the state's Yoreme cultural tourism route. Visits usually include a talk on Yoreme history and beliefs, traditional dances, and a meal of handmade tortillas, fresh cheese, asiento, and homemade salsa.
The most intense time of year is Lent, when the Yoreme communities hold their contis, ritual processions in which men dressed as fariseos (also called chapayecas) wear carved masks and blankets and dance with tenábaris, rattles made from butterfly cocoons filled with pebbles that sound in time with the drums. The fariseos represent evil in these Holy Week ceremonies.
