Town 17 km southwest of El Fuerte
A Yoreme ceremonial town on the river with an old Jesuit mission and a free community museum of Holy Week masks.
Tehueco is a small town of around 850 people on the Río Fuerte, south-west of El Fuerte, just above the point where the Cuchujaqui River joins it. It takes its name from the Tehueco, a fierce Indigenous people who resisted the Spanish conquest of Sinaloa, and today it is one of the seven traditional ceremonial centers of the Yoreme (Mayo) people in the region.
That double heritage is what makes it worth a visit. Tehueco is a place where pre-Hispanic beliefs and Catholic ritual have blended over centuries. The town keeps its old Jesuit mission, the church of Dolores, and a ceremonial ground where the community gathers for its religious festivals, above all during Lent and Holy Week.
The Miguel Ángel Morales Ibarra Community Museum tells that story through the objects of the Yoreme Holy Week: costumes, carved masks, and musical instruments, along with everyday objects and tools that show how people here lived and worked in the past. The river that runs past the town is still the community's lifeline.
