About Ánimas Trujano

Ánimas Trujano covers only 6.7 km² in Oaxaca's Centro district, at roughly 1,500 m, and is now part of the Oaxaca metropolitan area. It borders Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán, San Agustín de las Juntas and Santa María Coyotepec. The 2020 census counted 4,227 people in the town and 4,564 in the whole municipality, which also has four tiny localities: El Zapotillo (282), La Tortuga (35), La Ciénega (14) and El Paredón (6). The town grew from 1,078 residents in 1970 to 2,006 in 1990 and 3,505 in 2010.

The name has two layers. Ánimas was a neighbourhood of the place; Trujano was added later for the insurgent Valerio Trujano, who stayed here with his troops during the War of Independence and was killed by royalist forces while trying to free his captured son. Accounts summarised on Wikipedia say the village once belonged to San Bartolo Coyotepec, together with Santa María, La Raya and San Bartolo el Pequeño. Two or three families sent from San Bartolo to work the land settled it first, and the Hacienda del Carmen was added later. It became a municipality on 17 February 1868.

The church, one of the oldest nineteenth-century churches in the state, is a recognised historic monument. The town has its own municipal wind band and keeps a Danza de la Pluma. Feasts honour the Virgin of Guadalupe on 12 December, the Virgin of the Rosary and Holy Week. Local tables feature mole negro, empanadas, tlayudas with asiento, chocolate, champurrado and atole de granillo. The economy rests mainly on commerce and tourism.
