About San Antonio Cuajimoloyas

San Antonio Cuajimoloyas is a Zapotec village high in Oaxaca's Sierra Norte, at roughly 3,170 m above sea level among pine and oak forest that is often wrapped in fog. It belongs to the municipality of San Miguel Amatlán and is the most populous of the Pueblos Mancomunados, eight neighbouring communities (Amatlán, Lachatao, Yavesía, Benito Juárez, La Nevería, Latuvi, Llano Grande and Cuajimoloyas) that together hold some 25,000 hectares of mountain forest. Together they run Expediciones Sierra Norte, a community-owned ecotourism project with cabins and guides in each village.

Cuajimoloyas opened to ecotourism and adventure travel in 1998, and two years later it held its first Feria Regional de Hongos Silvestres. The fair takes place over a weekend in July: on the first day groups led by community guides walk about three hours through the forest to the Llano de Tarajeas, collecting one mushroom of each species, and the basket with the most variety wins; the second day brings talks, exhibits and mushroom cooking. In 2019 the collectors found 270 species, from prized edibles such as Amanita caesarea to poisonous ones.

The village's ecotourism centre is called Yaa-Cuetzi, and from it run a zip line about a kilometre long and a suspension bridge 137 m long and 21 m high with views across the ridges. Trails lead to viewpoints, to the Cañón del Coyote and to neighbouring villages; the walk to Llano Grande is about 8.5 km through high, fairly level forest. The village also has a traditional medicine centre. Nights are cold all year and rain can come in any season, so warm layers matter even in the dry months.
