    About Casa del Lago Juan José Arreola

    Casa del Lago Juan José Arreola is UNAM's cultural centre in the First Section of Chapultepec Park, on the shore of the Lago Mayor with a view of Chapultepec Castle. The house went up in the early 1900s, under Porfirio Díaz, as the Automobile Club's headquarters, and was later used by the park administration, the Education Ministry and the university's Institute of Biology. It opened as a cultural centre on 15 September 1959, the first UNAM space away from the Ciudad Universitaria campus, with the writer Juan José Arreola as its first coordinator; it took his name in 2002.

    People come for the programme rather than the building: music, literature, film, performing and visual arts, digital culture, workshops and courses. There is a cinema, an exhibition room, the open-air Foro Abierto, a garden with multichannel audio called Espacio Sonoro, and a puppet theatre, El Nahual. The Poesía en Voz Alta festival, revived in 2005, is one of its best-known yearly events, and since 1999 it has run evening walks in the park. The October-December 2026 programme includes film series, sound actions and installations across several spaces, and curatorial workshops.

    All programme activities are free until the room is full, so arrive early. The schedule changes each quarter, so check casadellago.unam.mx before you go.

    The pedestrian entrance is on Paseo de la Reforma at the Puerta Acuario, the Zoo's main gate, inside the First Section of Chapultepec Park (Primera Sección s/n, San Miguel Chapultepec). Metro: Auditorio (Line 7), Chapultepec (Line 1) or Polanco (Line 7). Metrobús: Antropología (Line 7). Ecobici: Paseo de la Reforma and Arquímedes, and Museo de Antropología. There is no car parking, only bicycle parking; nearby car parks are at the Museo Nacional de Antropología, the Auditorio Nacional and the Museo Tamayo.
