About Almoloya de Alquisiras

Almoloya de Alquisiras is a village of 3,158 people (2020 census) tucked into a fold of mountains in the far south of the State of Mexico, between Coatepec Harinas, Texcaltitlán, Sultepec and Zacualpan. Its old name, Amoloyan, is Nahuatl for "place where water springs", and it fits: streams, waterfalls and fruit orchards surround it, and avocado country begins to the northwest. The second half of the name came from the state legislature on 13 April 1869, honouring Pedro Ascencio de Alquisiras, an insurgent guerrilla leader of the War of Independence who settled in the municipality in 1817; every 16 September a local plays him in the parade.

In colonial times the village was a trading stop for the mining towns of Zacualpan and Sultepec. Its church of San Pedro dates from 1727. The biggest celebration falls on the fourth Friday of Lent, in honour of Jesús de Nazaret, with masses and processions at the parish, fairground rides, concerts on an open-air stage and the crowning of a fair queen. On 29 June, the feast of Saint Peter, there are dances of Moors and shepherds, brass bands, fireworks and a rodeo.

Potters here and in nearby Cuauhtenco make jugs, pots, water jars, flowerpots and comales. The local dish is cocido, a hearty meat and vegetable stew, and families also make little brain tamales and homemade liqueurs of fig, blackberry, tabaquillo and lime. In the municipality, by Cerro de Tlapexco, El Salto is a waterfall about 10 m high.
