About Atotonilquillo
Atotonilquillo is a town in the municipality of Chapala, about 20 km northeast of the municipal seat and about 45 km southeast of Guadalajara, beside the Ocotlán–La Barca highway. The 2020 census counted 7,004 people, the third-largest locality in the municipality. It sits at about 1,530 metres above sea level, in farmland, with quince as its emblematic crop.
That fruit is behind its best-known event, the Expo Membrillo, a country fair held on the central plaza, almost always the second weekend of August. Stalls sell regional home cooking, with turnovers, pies, ice cream, liqueurs and quince paste (ate or cajeta), there is a cultural week beforehand with a parade and the crowning of the Señorita Expo Membrillo, live music and folk dance, and contests for dishes made with the fruit. In 2022 the fair reached its 29th edition after two years off because of the pandemic.
The town church is the parish of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, built of red brick with two towers. Around the town are quince orchards and the ruins of the San Gaspar chapel. Atequiza, the old hacienda with its Porfirian-era theatre, is about 2 km away by road, so the two towns are easy to visit together.
