About Quimixto

Quimixto is a fishing village on the south shore of Banderas Bay, in the municipality of Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco, between the beaches of Las Ánimas to the east and Majahuitas to the west. No road reaches it: the village is about 20 minutes by water taxi from Boca de Tomatlán, and the only other way in is on foot along the coast. The 2020 census counted 368 people, a figure that has slowly fallen from 423 in 2005; families live from fishing, from the boats and from the visitors who come for the day.

The beach is a long stretch of amber-colored sand with clear, greenish water and gentle to moderate waves, quieter than busy Las Ánimas next door, with a couple of simple restaurants on the sand and a few more on the village's main lane serving ceviche tostadas and fresh fish. The water is good for snorkeling and diving, and in the fall and spring surfers sometimes find waves here, though they are not reliable.

Most people come for the waterfall. From the beach a path leads up through the village's cobbled lanes, past the horses for hire, across a shallow ford and into the forest along the La Puerta River, with signs reading "Cascada" along the way. It is about half an hour on foot, a little more than a mile with some climbing, or you can ride a horse. The fall is modest, around 10 meters, dropping between rocks into a deep pool where people swim; even in the dry months of May and June, when the flow is low, the pool is still good for a dip. A restaurant-bar overlooks the falls and expects visitors who use its tables and the pool to order something. Many boat tours from Puerto Vallarta stop here, but staying on into the afternoon, after they leave, gives you the beach almost to yourself.
