About Playa Majahuitas

Playa Majahuitas is a small cove on the south shore of Banderas Bay, in the municipality of Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco, about 2 kilometers west of the village of Quimixto and some 29 kilometers from Puerto Vallarta, set between Quimixto and Yelapa where the jungle-covered hills of the Sierra Madre run straight down to the sea. There is no road; it is reached only by boat. The name is said to come from majahua, the local name of a coastal hibiscus with large leaves that grows along the beaches of the southern bay.

The cove has white sand, a rocky shoreline and clear, green water, sheltered enough to be calm on most days. Underwater it is one of the richer spots in the bay: a reef, small caves and the edge of an underwater canyon with "gardens" of eels attract snorkelers and divers, who see parrotfish, damselfish, pufferfish, trumpetfish, angelfish and moray eels. From late November to mid-March dolphins, manta rays, sea turtles and humpback whales may also pass by.

The land belongs to the ejido of the indigenous community of Chacala, and for many years the beach was held under a concession. For a long time it was home to the Von Rohr family, and later to a small eco-resort of eight open-air casitas lit by solar power and candles, which has since closed. Today Majahuitas is above all a tour stop: catamarans and yachts from Puerto Vallarta anchor offshore and bring guests in for snorkeling, kayaking, paddleboarding and a barbecue lunch, often combined with a visit to Yelapa. Mexican beaches are public by law, so you can also come on your own by water taxi, but there are few or no services for independent visitors, so bring what you need.

How to get to Playa Majahuitas

Drive from Puerto Vallarta to Muelle de Los Muertos, Puerto Vallarta: 10 min, 6 km

Majahuitas is reached only by sea. Water taxis (pangas) leave from the Los Muertos pier in Puerto Vallarta's Zona Romántica and take about 35 minutes. Alternatively, take a bus or taxi south on Highway 200 to Boca de Tomatlán and a panga from there, about 15 minutes, passing Colomitos, Las Ánimas, Quimixto and Las Caletas on the way; ask the boatman to drop you at Majahuitas and agree on a pickup time. Many all-inclusive day tours from the Puerto Vallarta cruise port and marina also stop here, often together with Yelapa or the Marietas Islands.
