About Museo del Cuale

The Museo del Cuale, formally the Museo Arqueológico de Puerto Vallarta Cuale, is a small archaeology museum run by Mexico's national institute of anthropology and history, INAH, on Isla del Río Cuale, the island in the river that divides downtown Puerto Vallarta from the Zona Romántica. It sits among the craft stalls near the seaward end of the island, a few steps from the footbridges that link the two banks, in a low white building with a red-tile roof.

It opened in December 1978, and its first temporary exhibition was devoted to the Manila galleon, the Spanish trade route that tied Mexico to the Philippines. After maintenance work on the building and a new museography in 2004, it reopened in 2005 with a collection on loan from the regional museums of Guadalajara, Colima and Michoacán. The permanent display is about the peoples who lived in West Mexico before the Spanish arrived, and it is laid out in six themes: the move from nomadic life to settled villages, the symmetrical designs of Chupícuaro pottery, the underground shaft tombs, the symbols painted on Aztatlán ceramics, the Purépecha empire, and the conquest and what survived it. Among the pieces are geometric pottery, stone hammers, scrapers and projectile points, masks, offerings from burials and ornaments of shell, jade, bone, obsidian and serpentine. They come from excavations at Sayula and Zacoalco de Torres in Jalisco, the bay of Matanchén in Nayarit, the Puerto Vallarta area and as far away as Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo in Guerrero.

The museum is tiny, and many visitors to the island walk past without noticing it, but it is one of the few places in Vallarta to see the region's history before the resort town existed. INAH has also staged temporary shows here, such as one on the body and sexuality in the pre-Hispanic West in 2013 and a return to the Manila galleon and the spice route in 2018. As of October 2026 INAH lists the museum as temporarily closed, with no reopening date, so check before making a special trip.
