About Mercado Municipal Río Cuale

The Mercado Municipal Río Cuale is Puerto Vallarta's best-known public market, a long two-storey building on the north bank of the Cuale River at the edge of El Centro, on Calle Agustín Rodríguez, facing the Isla del Río Cuale and the Zona Romántica across the water. The market itself dates from 1957; the present building was designed by Alejandro Zohn, the Vienna-born Guadalajara architect behind that city's Mercado Libertad, and put up between 1977 and 1979. Its white walls, dark timber balconies, latticework and deep tiled roofs follow the river's curve, and in November 2025 the Federation of Colleges of Architects of the Mexican Republic placed a plaque at the entrance naming it a monitored building of its architectural observatory, a mark reserved for notable twentieth-century buildings.

Inside, narrow corridors of small stalls are packed with what visitors come downtown for: traditional clothing, shoes and leather goods, jewellery, hand-woven hammocks, crafts and every kind of beach souvenir. A row of small food stalls, with names like Rincón del Taco, Don Toño and Doña Gero, serves traditional Mexican food at market prices. The stallholders run their own association and keep an eye on the cruise-ship calendar, since passengers coming ashore are a big part of their trade. It is an everyday working market rather than a showpiece, which is much of its charm.

The building is showing its age. The pandemic and then the flooding of Hurricane Nora in August 2021 hit the traders hard, and the market only celebrated its economic reopening in October 2022. In 2025 and 2026 civil protection reports flagged rotten roof beams, sagging and cracked arches in the older section, and the city has announced a full rehabilitation, with new wiring, beams, roof tiles and bathrooms, that is meant to keep the original design.
