About Muelle de Playa Los Muertos

The Muelle de Playa Los Muertos, usually just the Los Muertos Pier, juts into Banderas Bay from the middle of Playa Los Muertos, at the foot of Calle Francisca Rodríguez in Puerto Vallarta's Zona Romántica. It is both a landmark and a working pier: the city's postcard sail by night and, by day, the departure point for the boats that serve the beaches and villages of the south shore.

The present pier was redesigned by the architect José de Jesús Torres Vega as part of a wider renovation of downtown Vallarta and opened in 2013. Its design runs from an entrance plaza on the beach along a walkway and a footbridge raised on slim supports to a round lookout platform at the end, with a landing stage for boats. Over the platform rises a tall metal structure shaped like a sail, held by cables and lit in changing colours after dark; on the map the whole thing runs a little over 100 meters into the sea. By the early 2020s salt and age had taken their toll, and in late 2023 the Jalisco state government delivered a 12.5-million-peso rehabilitation that cut out corroded sections and reinforced the structure, replaced damaged benches and some railings, improved the area where fishermen unload their catch and installed new lighting.

Walking out to the end is one of the classic things to do in the old town, above all at sunset, when the sun goes down over the bay straight ahead and the lights come on behind you. From the pier, water taxis leave several times a day for Yelapa, a ride of about 45 minutes, with tickets sold on the spot, and since January 2026 the large Ferry Vallarta boat from Marina Vallarta has also called here on its way to Yelapa three days a week. Local fishermen still land their catch here.
