About Zona Romántica

The Zona Romántica, also called Old Town or simply Olas Altas, is the part of Puerto Vallarta that lies south of the Río Cuale and west of Calle Insurgentes, down to the sea. It is not an official district but a nickname for three colonias, Emiliano Zapata, Alta Vista and Amapas, that climb from the beach up the green hillside. Many of the streets are still cobbled, and the low whitewashed buildings with tile roofs, bougainvillea and wrought-iron balconies keep more of the old fishing-town look than the rest of the city.

It was the core of the original town that became a resort in the 20th century, and today it is where Vallarta goes to eat and go out. Calle Basilio Badillo is the main strip of cafés, restaurants, shops and galleries; Calle Olas Altas runs parallel to the beach with hotels and terraces; and the area is dense with art galleries and street murals, like the Mozayko mosaic mural on Calle Pino Suárez (2013). At the seafront are Playa Los Muertos, the city's busiest beach, and the sail-shaped Los Muertos Pier, opened in 2013 and lit up at night, where water taxis leave for the south shore. A small park, Parque Lázaro Cárdenas, hosts the Saturday farmers' market in the winter season.

The Zona Romántica is also the centre of the gay scene of a city known for welcoming LGBTQ+ travellers, with gay-friendly hotels, beach clubs along Los Muertos, bars, drag cabarets and clubs. Vallarta Pride, held each May, runs a week of events here; in 2026 it was May 17-24, with the parade ending at Lázaro Cárdenas Park and a street party afterwards. By day the area is relaxed and walkable; at night the restaurants fill up and the bars stay open late. Food tours, taco tours and evening bar crawls start from these streets.

How to get to Zona Romántica

Drive from Puerto Vallarta: 5 min, 5 km

The Zona Romántica begins at the south bank of the Río Cuale: from the Malecón in El Centro walk across the Cuale footbridge. City buses marked "Centro" run from the airport and hotel zone through downtown to the old town (22 pesos, January 2026), and buses marked "Túnel" skip downtown and come straight through the bypass tunnel. Buses south to Mismaloya and Boca de Tomatlán leave from the corner of Basilio Badillo and Constitución, about every 20 minutes, and water taxis to the south-shore beaches leave from Los Muertos Pier.
