One of the largest bays in Mexico, open to the Pacific between Cabo Corrientes in Jalisco and Punta de Mita in Nayarit, with the Ameca River marking the state line at its head. Puerto Vallarta fills the Jalisco shore; Nuevo Vallarta, Bucerías and La Cruz de Huanacaxtle line the Nayarit side. South of Puerto Vallarta the mountains drop straight into the sea, so Yelapa, Quimixto and the beaches around them are reached by water taxi, and from December to March humpback whales come into the bay to calve. This guide also covers the coast just outside it: Sayulita and the Riviera Nayarit to the north, El Tuito and the Pacific shore of Cabo Corrientes to the south.
