About El Carleño

El Carleño is a farming village in the north of the municipality of San Blas, Nayarit, on the low, flat plain of the Río Grande de Santiago delta. It lies about 1.7 km north of Guadalupe Victoria (La Virocha), the main town of this part of the municipality, with El Madrigaleño just over a kilometer away and Aután a little under two kilometers to the east-southeast. The port of San Blas is about 17.5 km away in a straight line, some 25 km and half an hour by road.

The 2020 census counted 346 people in 107 occupied homes, almost exactly the same as in 2010 and a little more than the 323 of 2005; it ranks 26th among the municipality's localities. The village has a community preschool and primary schools, and its streets carry the names of revolutionaries and states, from Lázaro Cárdenas and Francisco Villa to Puebla and Veracruz. About 42 percent of the population is economically active, and like its neighbors it lives from the ejido fields, mostly beans; in 2023 El Carleño was among the villages whose farmers asked the state for help leveling their land.

Until recently the only way in was a deteriorated stone-paved road that rain could make impassable. In 2024 the Nayarit government budgeted about 9.5 million pesos to rebuild the 1.6 km access road with asphalt, describing it as the village's only access. Residents of El Carleño and other communities around Guadalupe Victoria have also complained, as recently as 2025, about smoke and leachate from the open-air municipal dump in the area. For meals, the nearest listed eateries are small restaurants in Guadalupe Victoria, under two kilometers away.
