About Reforma Agraria
Reforma Agraria, listed in the census as Reforma Agraria (La Colorada), is a village in the northeast of the municipality of San Blas, Nayarit, on the flat lowland that stretches from the hills behind the port toward the Río Grande de Santiago. It stands only about eight meters above sea level, some 16 kilometers northeast of San Blas in a straight line, surrounded by fields crossed by irrigation canals. The old road between San Blas and Huaristemba, a village of about 700 people some four kilometers away, runs past it, and La Libertad, at the foot of the hills, is about eight kilometers to the south.
Its name, "agrarian reform", recalls the land distribution that created Mexico's ejidos in the twentieth century. It is a modest but growing community: 484 people at the 2005 census, 561 in 2010 and 576 in 2020, living in 172 occupied homes. Daily life has changed quickly. Between 2010 and 2020 the share of homes with piped water rose from about 60 to almost 90 percent, the share with internet from almost none to more than four in ten, and almost six in ten households now have a car. The village has a kindergarten and two primary schools.
There is nothing set up for visitors. The nearest restaurants, mostly seafood places, are about nine kilometers away in Villa Hidalgo, and the nearest motels and hotels 11 to 15 kilometers away. For travelers it is part of the farm country that most people only cross on the way to the coast; the beaches, old port and mangroves of San Blas are the place to stay.
