About El Capomo
El Capomo is a small farming village in the north of the municipality of San Blas, Nayarit, out on the flat coastal plain between the port of San Blas and the delta of the Río Grande de Santiago. It lies about 15 km north-northeast of San Blas in a straight line, roughly 21 km and twenty minutes by road, at the end of a dirt road that runs about four kilometers south from the state highway linking Guadalupe Victoria with federal Highway 15. It should not be confused with the other El Capomo, a beach-side village in the municipality of Compostela.
The 2020 census counted 158 people in 51 occupied homes, down from 188 in 2010; it is the 37th largest of the municipality's localities. The village is a grid of a dozen or so streets named after Mexican states and cities, with two primary schools, Amado Nervo and José R. Gómez, and a community preschool. Fewer than half of those over twelve have paid work, and almost a third of households own a car, so the daily trip to the shops and services of Guadalupe Victoria, La Goma or Villa Hidalgo is part of life here.
The village lives from the ejido fields around it, mostly beans. In 2023 El Capomo was among the communities of the plain whose farmers asked the state for help leveling their land after poor seasons. Local problems make the news too: in 2025 a state deputy said the piped water supply to El Capomo had been cut off for more than twenty years, and residents of the area complained that smoke from the open-air municipal dump drifts over villages including El Capomo. There is nothing aimed at visitors; the beaches, mangroves and restaurants of San Blas are a twenty-minute drive away.
