About La Chiripa

La Chiripa is a village on the coastal plain north of San Blas, Nayarit, right on the paved road that runs from the port to Guadalupe Victoria (La Virocha). It lies about 10 km north of San Blas in a straight line, roughly 14 km and under twenty minutes by car, with the village of Chacalilla about 5 km to the east. The land around it is low and wet, criss-crossed by canals and streams, with shrimp ponds about a kilometer away and fields and orchards beyond.

The 2020 census counted 371 people in 113 occupied homes, up from 318 in 2010; it ranks 30th among the municipality's localities. It is a working village: more than half of the residents over twelve had a job in 2020, a high share for the area, including 44 percent of women, and about one home in three had internet. Most residents are Catholic. La Chiripa has a community preschool and two primary schools, Rey Nayar and Vicente Lombardo Toledano, and one of its streets also bears the name of Rey Nayar, the Cora ruler for whom the state of Nayarit is named.

The road through the village matters for the whole north of the municipality, and in 2022 the governor of Nayarit singled out the conservation of the San Blas to La Chiripa road among the state's road works, as part of a push for the farming, fishing and tourism of the northern coast. For visitors La Chiripa is a place you pass on the way to Guadalupe Victoria, Mexcaltitán or the villages of the Río Grande de Santiago delta; San Blas, with its mangroves, beaches and restaurants, is the obvious base.
