Guadalupe Victoria

Guadalupe Victoria, which almost everyone around here calls La Virocha, is a farming town in the north of the municipality of San Blas, Nayarit. It lies on the low, flat coastal plain that stretches from San Blas toward Santiago Ixcuintla and the mouth of the Río Grande de Santiago, only a few meters above sea level and about 15 km north of the port in a straight line. The town takes its name from Guadalupe Victoria, the first president of Mexico, and its streets are named after the dates and heroes of Mexican history.

With 3,066 people at the 2020 census, living in about 900 homes, it is one of the three main localities of the municipality, together with San Blas itself and Jalcocotán, and it has grown slowly but steadily from about 2,600 people in 2005. It is the center of a cluster of small rural settlements: El Madrigaleño and El Carleño are a kilometer or two away, the village of Aután lies a little over 2 km to the southwest, and Pimientillo, Playa de Ramírez and Isla del Conde are scattered to the north toward the river. Besides primary schools and kindergartens there is an agricultural technical secondary school and, just outside town, an agricultural technical high school (CBTA 130), which says a lot about what the area lives from.

This is working farmland. The ejido of Guadalupe Victoria and its neighboring ejidos grow beans above all, and their harvests and prices are regular news in Nayarit: in early 2026 farmers here reported a season badly hit by armyworm and whitefly. Toward the coast the fields give way to estuaries and shrimp farms, and local fishermen cast their nets in the channels. There are no sights in the usual sense, but the town is a real slice of rural coastal Nayarit, a short drive from the beaches and mangroves of San Blas and on the back road to the island town of Mexcaltitán. The climate is hot and humid, with an average of about 25 °C and most of the rain falling in summer.
