About Piedra Blanca
Piedra Blanca is a small white rock standing in the Pacific just off Isla del Rey, the long strip of sand and scrub that the estuary separates from the town of San Blas, Nayarit. It lies about a kilometer southwest of the Isla del Rey lighthouse and roughly 1.5 kilometers from the town's waterfront, facing the beach known as Playa del Rey. The islet itself is tiny, a few dozen meters across, but it is one of the most meaningful places on this whole coast, sacred at once to the Catholic fishermen of San Blas and to the Wixárika (Huichol) people of the Sierra Madre.
For San Blas, the rock belongs to Nuestra Señora del Rosario, known here as La Marinera, the patron of sailors, whose image stands on top of it. Every year on October 7, her feast day, people from the port go out to the rock to honor her. For the Wixárika, the island and its white rocks are Tatéi Haramara, the home of the mother sea, where life came out of the primordial ocean; the Náayeri (Cora) call the place Che'erimu'na. In August 2023 a presidential decree formally recognized Tatéi Haramara as the western one of the five principal sacred places of the Wixárika, Náayeri, O'dam and Mexikan peoples, alongside Wirikuta in San Luis Potosí. Wixárika families travel here from the mountains to leave offerings and hold ceremonies, sometimes in full traditional dress.
That protection came after years of conflict. In 2011 parts of Isla del Rey were granted to tourism developers, and Wixárika leaders have long complained that the sacred area keeps shrinking: in 2023 only about six hectares were protected as sacred, with another 29 approved by the San Blas council, while a ferry dock and other projects were proposed nearby. Visitors are welcome, but this is a place of worship for two communities: watch ceremonies from a distance, ask before photographing anyone and leave offerings where they are. Most people see the rock from Playa del Rey after the short panga crossing from town, combined with a walk up to the old red-and-white lighthouse for the view over San Blas.
