Town 15 km southeast of San Blas
A quiet fishing village south of Matanchén with pebbly beaches, good surf, rock oysters and an old 19th-century German house.
Santa Cruz de Miramar is a fishing village on the coast about 15 kilometers south of San Blas, past Matanchén Bay and Aticama. It is a calm, unhurried place where fishing and farming still come first, and its beaches, framed by cliffs and covered in smooth stones of many colors, feel far from the busier sands up the coast.
The village has an unexpected history. In the 19th century German settlers came here, drawn by mining and trade, and around 1850 one of them built a large house above the bay, along with a coconut-oil soap factory that shipped its goods through San Blas and Mazatlán. The Germans' hacienda was attacked by agrarian rebels in 1933, and the old house, later turned into a hotel, can still be seen from the beach to the north, near the remains of an old pier.
Today people come for the food: the restaurants are known for fish and seafood, especially the rock oyster pulled from the nearby reefs. Surfers come for the waves, and visitors like to take photos at La Campana, a bell-shaped rock near the cliffs.
