Beach 21 km south of San Blas
A fishing village beach south of Santa Cruz de Miramar with grilled-fish ramadas, a river-mouth surf break and a sea turtle camp.
Platanitos is a small fishing village on a cove south of Santa Cruz de Miramar, on the stretch of coast between San Blas and the Jaltemba Bay. It has a handful of small hotels and a row of ramadas, open-sided seafood restaurants where the specialty is pescado zarandeado, fish split open and grilled over coals.
The beach is popular with intermediate surfers for its sandy-bottomed break at the mouth of a river, and just to the north lies Playa Las Tortugas, a long, nearly empty beach with good waves. Behind the beach, an estuary winds through mangroves that are good for paddling a kayak.
Platanitos is also home to one of the most important sea turtle camps on the Riviera Nayarit, where nests are protected and hatchlings released to the sea in season. If you visit during the nesting season, roughly summer and autumn, ask whether a release is planned and how you can join it respectfully.
What to see and do
Eat pescado zarandeado at one of the beach ramadas.
Surf the river-mouth break, or the waves at nearby Playa Las Tortugas.
Paddle a kayak through the mangrove estuary behind the beach.
Ask at the turtle camp about hatchling releases in season.
Getting there
From San Blas follow the coast road south past Matanchén, Aticama and Santa Cruz de Miramar; Platanitos is roughly 45 minutes to an hour away. The road is winding in places, so drive in daylight. There is little public transport this far south, so a car is the practical option.
