Villa Morelos

Villa Morelos is a village at the southern end of the municipality of Compostela, Nayarit, about 2 km inland from Lo de Marcos and some 26 km north of Sayulita. It lies about 26 meters above sea level on the narrow strip of flat land between Highway 200 and the newer Las Varas–Puerto Vallarta toll road (200D), which runs along its eastern edge, and behind it the forested slopes of the Sierra de Vallejo rise. Those mountains have been a biosphere reserve since 2004, covering some 550 square kilometers of southern Nayarit. The smaller village of Chula Vista adjoins it to the north, and Úrsulo Galván, at the entrance to Lo de Marcos, is about 2 km to the west.

Like its neighbors, it has grown quickly: the census counted 363 people in 2005, 397 in 2010 and 532 in 2020. It is a plain residential village with a handful of streets, the Raúl Ernesto Delgado primary school, a telesecundaria at the end of Calle Francisco I. Madero and a kindergarten on Calle Hidalgo. There are no hotels or sights, and the climate is warm, about 25 °C on average, with most of the rain in summer.

For a visitor its value is its location. The beach of Lo de Marcos is a few minutes away, the La Florida junction where the toll road meets Highway 200 is just north of Chula Vista, and from there the Jaltemba Bay beaches begin at Los Ayala, about 14 km up the coast, with El Monteón and the wild beach of Punta Raza on the way. Sayulita is under half an hour to the south.
