About Punta Monterrey

Punta Monterrey is a rocky point and the beach beside it, Playa Monterrey, on the Riviera Nayarit coast between San Francisco (San Pancho) and Lo de Marcos, a couple of kilometers south of Lo de Marcos's main beach. It is one of the quietest corners of this stretch: thick tropical forest comes down to the sand, there is no town on the beach, and the only way in is a dirt road of about 2.7 kilometers from the highway.

The beach is looked after as a conservation area. Camping is not allowed, local people help keep it clean, and visitors are expected to carry their rubbish out with them. The waves are usually moderate, good for surfing and, on calm days, for a swim; as on the rest of this open coast, check the sea before going in.

The one place to stay is Hotel Punta Monterrey, a small eco-style resort of cabins and bungalows set in the jungle above the water, with about a dozen rooms for up to 35 guests. It arranges sportfishing trips on the open sea, kayaking and visits to a private orchid garden. Day visitors come mostly for the empty sand and the forest, combining it with lunch in Lo de Marcos or San Pancho.
