About San Isidro

San Isidro is a small village on the coastal plain in the north-west of the municipality of Compostela, Nayarit, about 3 km north of the town of Zacualpan and some 28 km west of the municipal seat, Compostela. It sits about 29 meters above sea level on the road from Zacualpan to Ixtapa de la Concepción, with the hill of Cerro El Palmoso just to the north-west. The 2020 census counted 257 people, against 221 in 2005 and 266 in 2010.

It is a quiet, everyday place: a few streets, among them Lázaro Cárdenas, Francisco Villa, Cuauhtémoc and Revolución, a primary school named Plan de Ayala and a community preschool. There are no hotels or sights, and the climate is warm and wet, with an average temperature of about 25 °C and rain on some 170 days a year, most of it in summer.

Most visitors pass through on the way to the coast. The route from Rincón de Guayabitos and La Peñita to Playa de las Tortugas, roughly 70 minutes in all, runs from Las Varas through Zacualpan, San Isidro and Ixtapa de la Concepción before dropping to the sea at Platanitos, where the Conanp turtle camps release hundreds of thousands of hatchlings each season. Closer to home, Zacualpan, the nearest town, is known for its devotion to the Divino Niño, which draws pilgrims on the first Sunday of every month, and the turtle beach of Chila is about 14 km away.
