About Ixtapa de la Concepción
Ixtapa de la Concepción is a farming village of 1,412 people (2020 census) in the northwest of the municipality of Compostela, Nayarit, about 40 meters above sea level on the coastal plain. It lies at the end of a state road branch about 7.7 km north of Zacualpan and some 17 km from Las Varas and Highway 200. Its name joins two traditions: Ixtapa is read from Nahuatl as a river of salty water, and Concepción comes from the village's patron, Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception.
It is older than many places on this coast: the 1900 census already counted 155 people here. It grew to almost 2,400 by 1980 and has slowly shrunk since, in a municipality whose economy is mainly agriculture and livestock.
The nearest beach is Chila, about 17 km away, and the Boca de Chila turtle camp watches 8 km of nesting beach that runs from Boca de Ixtapa to Boca de Chila. The climate is warm, about 25 degrees on average, with January the coolest month and August the wettest. Zacualpan, with its Divino Niño pilgrimages, and Las Varas, with its community museum, are short drives south.
