About Lima de Abajo

Lima de Abajo is a village on the coastal plain of the municipality of Compostela, Nayarit, just west of Highway 200 between La Peñita de Jaltemba and Las Varas, about 34 km northwest of the town of Compostela. The 2020 census counted 929 people, against 752 in 2005 and 942 in 2010. Its neighbour across the highway is La Puerta de la Lima, and together the two "Limas" sit in the low, warm country between the Sierra de Vallejo and the sea, with an average temperature of about 25 degrees.

It is a working village rather than a tourist stop: a grid of streets named after the heroes of Mexican independence and the revolution, a bullring on the east side and a full set of schools, from a preschool and the José María Morelos primary school to a telesecundaria and a telebachillerato. Its postal code is 63714.

For visitors it is a gateway. A local road runs west from the village to the coast at Boca del Naranjo, the northern end of Jaltemba Bay, and the El Naranjo beach, about 5 km away, is a long, almost untouched stretch of sand watched by a sea-turtle camp that lets groups pitch tents and help with the work. A few kilometers east, at La Puerta de la Lima, is the Altavista ceremonial site, where dozens of rocks carved with petroglyphs are still visited by the Wixárika (Huichol) for ceremonies, and the beaches of Chacala and Guayabitos are each a short drive away along Highway 200.
