About Jolotemba
Jolotemba is a village in the far south of the municipality of San Blas, Nayarit, in the green coastal hills behind the stony beaches of Santa Cruz de Miramar. It sits on the state road that leaves the Tepic coast road at El Llano and heads south toward Ixtapa de la Concepción, about 2.5 km south-southwest of El Llano and 4 km south of Santa Cruz de Miramar. San Blas is about 19 km away in a straight line, around 28 km and just over half an hour by road.
The 2020 census counted 298 people in 97 occupied homes, the same as in 2010 and up from 261 in 2005; it is the 31st largest locality of the municipality. The village has a kindergarten and two schools beside the highway, and a small restaurant, Las Majaguas, is listed in the state business register. Wooded hills rise around it: the 323-meter El Guaycur is under two kilometers to the northwest and Cerro El Filo a little further south, near the hamlet of El Espino, three kilometers away.
Jolotemba is best known in the news for its beach. Playa El Limoncito, a curving beach of almost two kilometers with coconut groves, high surf and a stream at its southern end, lies about 4 km beyond the village, shortly before Platanitos. A private development, Limoncito Hills, built villas and pool buildings near it, and in 2022 a state deputy backed the ejido of Jolotemba in a legal dispute after repeated complaints that the only access, an old farm road, ran through a restaurant that charged for entry and turned people away. Beaches in Mexico are federal land open to all, but check the current situation locally before you go.
How to get to Jolotemba
Drive from Tepic: 1 h, 62 km
From San Blas, follow the coast road south past Aticama to Santa Cruz de Miramar and El Llano; from Tepic, take the state road down through Jalcocotán to El Llano. At El Llano take the road south toward Ixtapa de la Concepción; Jolotemba is on it, about 2.5 km on. In all it is about 28 km and 35 minutes from San Blas.
