About El Llano
El Llano is a village of about 1,260 people in the south of the municipality of San Blas, on the state road that comes down from Tepic through Jalcocotán to the coast at Santa Cruz de Miramar. It lies about two and a half kilometers southeast of Santa Cruz, at around 40 meters above sea level, where the road to Ixtapa de la Concepción branches off; a tiny roadside settlement a kilometer to the northwest is registered as Crucero de El Llano.
The village grew from a few dozen people in 1900 to 1,259 at the 2020 census, living in 388 occupied homes. About half of those over twelve work, and the village has a kindergarten, a school and a gas station. Its position on the main road shows in its food: INEGI's business register lists a dozen small places here, from cenadurías and taquerías to wood-fired roast chicken, burgers, home-made desserts and a restaurant-bar.
There is no lodging in El Llano itself; the nearest rooms are in Santa Cruz de Miramar, three or four kilometers away. Visitors use the village as the last stop before the sea, a place to fill the tank or eat something on the way to the stony beaches of Santa Cruz and Playa Los Cocos, about five kilometers to the west. Other small communities nearby include Jolotemba, Tecuitata and El Cora, scattered over the hills to the east and south.
How to get to El Llano
Drive from Tepic: 50 min, 57 km
From Tepic, take state road 76 toward Santa Cruz de Miramar, which passes through Jalcocotán; El Llano is the village at the junction just before Santa Cruz, about 24 km from San Blas by the coast road, under half an hour by car. The road to Ixtapa de la Concepción branches off here.
