About El Limón

El Limón, registered by INEGI as Laureles y Góngora (El Limón), is a farming village in the north of the municipality of San Blas, Nayarit. It is the westernmost of the villages strung along the south bank of the lower Río Grande de Santiago: the river runs a little under a kilometer to the north, Boca del Asadero and the Pacific coast are about 4 kilometers to the west, and its sister village Laureles y Góngora (El Ciruelo) and Isla del Conde lie 2 to 3 kilometers to the east. The port of San Blas is about 25 km away by road.

The 2020 census counted 457 people living in 147 occupied homes, down from 529 in 2010. Most residents are Catholic and work the land of the ejido, which grows beans among other crops; the area is part of a zone officially recognized as having a low prevalence of fruit flies. The village has its own kindergarten, a primary school named Flores Magón and a telesecundaria, so children can study here through middle school. Like several of its neighbors it has struggled with basic services: in 2025 a local congresswoman listed El Limón among the San Blas communities without a reliable drinking water supply.

There are no hotels or tourist services, and El Limón is best seen as part of a drive through the delta country north of San Blas, where fields and canals give way to river banks, estuaries and shrimp ponds at the southern edge of the Marismas Nacionales wetlands. On the coast nearby, at Boca del Asadero, near the river's mouth, the Mexican Navy keeps a navigation light. The climate is hot and humid, around 25 °C on average, with the heaviest rain in August.
