About La Sauceda

La Sauceda is a small rural settlement in the sierra of Cabo Corrientes, the Jalisco municipality on the southern side of Banderas Bay. It lies at about 560 metres in wooded hills inland from the coast west of Yelapa, roughly 27 km from El Tuito, the municipal seat, in a straight line. It should not be confused with the better-known Hacienda La Sauceda near Cocula, far away in central Jalisco.

The 2020 census counted 141 people in 44 occupied homes, up slightly from 135 in 2010 but below the 182 of 2005. Almost every home has electricity and piped water and most have a mobile phone, but none had internet at the last count. The nearest neighbours are El Refugio Suchitlán, about 3 km north with some 190 people, and Ixtlahuahuey, with about 250, a little further on. The village lies on a network of unpaved streets and tracks mapped through these hills, and low peaks such as Cerro La Mina (819 m) and La Monja (827 m) rise around it.

The sierra around La Sauceda and its neighbours is raicilla country; near Ixtlahuahuey, a short drive away, the Joya family still distils the spirit in a traditional pit-oven tavern called Los Guajes. There is no lodging in La Sauceda itself, and the closest hotels listed are down on the coast around Yelapa.
