About Chimo
Chimo is a small fishing village on the southern shore of Banderas Bay, in the Jalisco municipality of Cabo Corrientes. It sits on a cove at the mouth of the Arroyo El Limón, roughly 15 km west of Yelapa along a coast of steep, forested mountains, at the point where the bay begins to open toward the cape of Cabo Corrientes and the open Pacific. It is far from everything: about two and a half hours by sea from Puerto Vallarta and around three hours by dirt road from El Tuito, the municipal seat.
The village had 221 inhabitants at the 2020 census, down from 285 in 2005, and local accounts put it at roughly 250 to 300 people. Almost everyone lives from the sea. Fishermen go out in pangas, some dive for octopus, and the catch is sold where they can, which is why residents keep asking for the pier that was started before 2000 and left about half built. Services are basic: there is a small health center, but anything serious means a 30-minute boat ride to Yelapa or a long taxi ride up the rural road to El Refugio. In 2019 Tropical Storm Narda pushed the El Limón stream over its banks and carried away ten houses.
For visitors Chimo is a place for quiet, not for sights. The beach is small and sheltered, there are a couple of simple seafood restaurants on the sand, and the surroundings are wild, with forested hills dropping to the water and good fishing offshore. Most outsiders arrive on chartered boats or fishing trips from Puerto Vallarta, so plan to be self-sufficient and bring cash.
