Town 13 km southwest of Sayulita
The tip of Banderas Bay: luxury resorts, an easy surf beach in the village, and boats to the Marieta Islands.
Punta de Mita is the headland at the northern tip of Banderas Bay, about 13 kilometers southwest of Sayulita. Most of the point is a gated resort area with some of Mexico's most expensive hotels and golf courses, but the public side is the fishing village of Corral del Risco, which is where most visitors go.
The village beach faces into the bay, so its water is calmer than Sayulita's, and its long, gentle waves are a favorite for beginner surfers and stand-up paddleboarders. Seafood restaurants line the sand, and fishing cooperatives run boat trips from the beach.
Those boats are the main reason many people come: the Marieta Islands lie about 8 kilometers offshore, a short ride from the point, and in winter humpback whales gather in the bay.
What to see and do
Take a surf or paddleboard lesson on the beach at Corral del Risco, where the waves are gentle.
Book a boat trip to the Marieta Islands with one of the fishing cooperatives on the beach.
Go whale watching between December and March, when humpbacks come to Banderas Bay.
Eat fresh seafood at the beach restaurants in the village.
Getting there
From Sayulita it is about 25 minutes by car or taxi: head south on Highway 200 and take the coastal road through Higuera Blanca to Punta de Mita. The resort area beyond the village is private; the beach and boats are in the village of Corral del Risco.
