About Rancho Primavera

Rancho Primavera is a privately owned ranch in the hills of Cabo Corrientes, about 3 km north-west of El Tuito along the dirt road to Chacala, roughly an hour's drive south of Puerto Vallarta. Its American owners, who have lived in Mexico for decades, bought the land in 1996, when it was a worn-out mango orchard and cattle ranch, and set about restoring it, planting more than 5,000 native trees across its 200 acres (about 80 hectares). The woods, meadows, creeks and ponds that grew back brought the wildlife with them, and the ranch has been receiving guests since 1999.

Today it is one of the best-known birding spots around Puerto Vallarta and a regular stop for birding tour groups. The owners count more than 250 species on the property, among them parrots, trogons, motmots, cuckoos and 16 kinds of hummingbird, plus many of the west Mexican endemics that birders travel for, such as the Citreoline Trogon, San Blas and Black-throated Magpie-Jays, Yellow-winged Cacique, Orange-breasted Bunting and Lilac-crowned Parrot. The feeders by the main house draw a constant crowd: one visiting birder logged 44 species in about two hours there and at the big pond, and a guest on a five-day stay counted 89.

Day birders can walk the trails through woodland and pasture without charge, though donations are welcome and support the ranch's work with rescued animals, including macaws kept in a large aviary. Horses and dogs roam the grounds, and there is a pond with a rowboat and paddle boards. For a longer stay there are three rental houses overlooking the pond, and camping has been possible with use of toilets and showers. The entrance track fords a shallow creek that heavy summer rain can make impassable for a while.

How to get to Rancho Primavera

Drive from Puerto Vallarta: 55 min, 53 km

From Puerto Vallarta take Highway 200 south about 45 km (about an hour) to El Tuito. Turn right off the highway at the road by the Pemex station and OXXO, follow the cobbled main street (Pablo Ríos) through town past the church and out the other side on the road to Chacala. About 3 km past town a white sign on the right marks Rancho Primavera; a short dirt track leads down to the ranch across a shallow creek that most cars can ford. Buses from Puerto Vallarta to El Tuito leave from Carranza and Aguacate in the Zona Romántica every half hour, and the ranch can arrange a pickup in El Tuito.
