Talpa de Allende is a small town in the mountains of western Jalisco and one of Mexico's major pilgrimage destinations. Pilgrims arrive throughout the year, many of them on foot, to visit the Virgin of the Rosary of Talpa in her basilica on the main square. Around the plaza, shops sell guava sweets and small figures made from chicle, two local specialties.
History
The name Talpa comes from the Nahuatl words tlalli, meaning earth, and pan, meaning on or over, so it can be read as 'on the land'. The second part of the name honors Ignacio Allende, one of the heroes of Mexico's War of Independence.
The town is the seat of the municipality of the same name. Its identity has long been bound up with devotion to the Virgin of the Rosary of Talpa, which draws pilgrims from across western Mexico and shapes the town's calendar, its commerce and its crafts. Talpa de Allende was named a Pueblo Mágico in 2015.
