About Mixtlán

Mixtlán is the seat of the municipality of the same name in the western highlands of Jalisco, at 1,540 metres above sea level according to the state statistics institute (IIEG). The Nahuatl name means "place of clouds" or "next to the clouds", which suits it: most of the municipality is mountainous, covered in pine, oak and holm-oak forest, and it rains from June to October. At the 2020 census the town had 1,710 people and the whole municipality 3,638.

The area was home to Coca, Teco or Cazcan peoples before the conquest. The Spanish arrived in the 1520s, the village depended first on Guachinango and from 1780 on Atenguillo, and it only became a municipality in its own right by decree on 20 October 1938. The main plaza has a bandstand and, beside it, a row of giant letters spelling the town's name; each one carries a local symbol, such as the coat of arms, San Sebastián Mártir, an owl (the people of Mixtlán are called tecolotes) and the Virgin invoked against lightning, to whom a vow-feast was made in 1903. The church, built of local stone with a plain façade, is dedicated to San Sebastián.

Outside the village the countryside offers forest, rock carvings at the Las Guajadas ranch, the Altamina pool and the raicilla-making community of San Gregorio. In the rainy season dozens of wild mushroom species come up in the hills, which is why the Feria del Hongo is held in the plaza every July.

How to get to Mixtlán

Drive from Guadalajara: 2 h 10 min, 139 km

From Guadalajara take federal highway 70 toward Ameca and Mascota; Mixtlán sits on the Ameca-Mascota stretch at kilometre 54, with a signposted turn-off to the village. It is 120 to 140 km, about 2.5 hours by car depending on the source. By bus, Autotransportes Guadalajara Talpa Mascota (ATM) leaves the Central Vieja in Guadalajara with runs that pass through Mixtlán; fares are reported at 340 to 450 pesos each way. Mascota, the neighbouring municipality to the north, is about 3 hours 15 minutes from the Central Vieja by bus. The dirt roads to San Gregorio, roughly 20 minutes beyond the village, get difficult in the rains: a high-clearance vehicle or a local guide is advised. ATM schedules change, so confirm them at the terminal.
