Comala is practically a suburb of Colima: fifteen minutes to the white town where Juan Rulfo set Pedro Páramo, with the Volcán de Fuego smoking above it and the botaneros serving free snacks with every drink. The rest of the Pueblos Mágicos are up in the Jalisco sierra: Sayula and Tapalpa in about an hour and a half, Mazamitla in two, all cool pine-forest towns that make a fine escape from the lowland heat. Comala aside, treat these as weekend trips with a night in a cabin.
