About La Resolana

La Resolana is the seat of Casimiro Castillo municipality, in Jalisco's Costa Sur region, with 11,543 people in 2020. The whole municipality once carried the name; now only the town does. Its land belonged to wealthy 19th- and early 20th-century families such as the González Corona, Álvarez Barragán, Michel and Elórtegui. The hacienda house went up in the late 1800s, and the estate became one of the most prosperous on the Jalisco coast.

Land reform upended it: in 1923 the hacienda lost land and owners clashed with ejido farmers, and in 1933 its owner, Julio Castillo, was murdered inside it. The Ejido La Resolana was formed in 1934, and on December 11, 1943 the district became a municipality, named after Casimiro Castillo, a congressman for Autlán and champion of land reform killed in 1925.

It is hot and wet: 25.2 °C on average and about 1,454 mm of rain a year, mostly in July and August. More than half the land is mountainous and forest covers about 43%. Streams feed the Purificación and Cihuatlán rivers, and there are springs such as El Guamúchil and El Chipiltitán and the El Capulín lagoon.
