About El Limón

El Limón is the seat of the municipality of the same name, in the Sierra de Amula, at about 880 metres above sea level. The 2020 census counted 3,125 people in the town and 5,368 in the whole municipality. It was formerly called El Limón Viejo or Almolón, and later El Limón Nuevo; it was a stopping place on the old Zapotlán–Autlán range road. According to the IIEG municipal diagnosis, the Spanish arrived from Colima in October 1525. Residents left the old site in December 1817 and settled on 8 January 1818 at El Limón Nuevo, partly to be near the royal road. It became a commissariat of Ejutla in 1883, passed to Autlán in 1897 and to El Grullo in 1912, and was made a municipality on 8 June 1921.

The town's calendar is long. The Immaculate Conception, patroness since 1818, is celebrated from 30 November with a novena, fireworks, bell-ringing and pilgrims from nearby villages; the Virgin of Guadalupe follows on 12 December. Bullfighting festivities run from 31 December to 13 January, and the Sacred Heart is honoured in June. In Holy Week the Last Supper, the arrest of Jesus and a living Way of the Cross are staged, a ceremony known across the region.

The church of San Juan is the best-known religious building. The municipality also has the Hacienda del Realito, the Presa de Luis reservoir, the Las Higueras spring and the hills of El Narigón, La Capilla and Las Tarjeas. In La Ciénega, another locality in the municipality, are El Salto and El Agua Caliente, a thermal spa. The main river is the Tuxcacuesco, which crosses the territory from west to east.

How to get to El Limón

Drive from Autlán: 30 min, 26 km

El Limón is in the Sierra de Amula, south of Ejutla and bordering El Grullo, Tonaya and Tuxcacuesco. Ejutla is about 23 km away in a straight line. The alternate El Grullo–Guadalajara route via Tapalpa passes through El Limón, Tonaya, Tuxcacuesco and San Gabriel, so the town sits on a regional road. There are no published schedules for a direct bus; buses to Guadalajara leave from Autlán about every two hours, so the practical way is to reach El Grullo or Autlán first and continue from there. Tapalpa, the nearest Pueblo Mágico, is about 43 km away in a straight line.
