Town 36 km southwest of Mazamitla
A sugar-cane town in a valley south of the sierra, with colonial churches, a hilltop park and old haciendas nearby.
Tamazula de Gordiano lies in a valley on the southern side of the Sierra del Tigre, beside the Tamazula River and at the foot of the Cerro de la Mesa, surrounded by fields of sugar cane. It takes its full name from General Gordiano Guzmán, an insurgent of the War of Independence born in the municipality.
The town has a wide central plaza with a kiosk, arcades and the town hall, and several notable churches: the parish of Nuestra Señora del Sagrario, the church of San Francisco, considered its most important colonial building and home to fine religious art, and the church of the Virgin of Guadalupe.
The area's sugar history is told by its haciendas, among them El Cortijo, a sugar mill dating to 1622, Santa Cruz, San José de Contla and San Vicente, which had one of the region's first cane mills. Above town, the Cerro de la Mesa ecotourism park has viewpoints over the valley and adventure activities such as zip lines.
