Waterfall 3 km southwest of Mazamitla
A waterfall of about 35 meters in the pine woods of Los Cazos, just south of town, with short trails and picnic spots.
El Salto is a waterfall of about 35 meters in the pine forest of Los Cazos, a wooded area about 2 to 3 kilometers south of Mazamitla's center. It is the most traditional short outing from town: a stream comes down from the Sierra del Tigre and drops over a rock face into a shaded ravine.
Los Cazos itself is a residential area of cabins and country houses set among pines and other conifers, many with elaborate gardens. Next to the falls is the Jardín Encantado, a garden in a European style with lawns, small bridges over clear streams and thatched kiosks where you can sit and rest.
The waterfall is fullest in and just after the summer rainy season; in the dry months, roughly March to May, it can be much thinner. Even then, the walk through the forest and the cool mountain air are reason enough to come, and the area works well for families, with short paths and places for a picnic.
What to see and do
Walk the short forest trail to the foot of the falls.
Stroll through the Jardín Encantado, with its bridges, streams and thatched kiosks.
Come in the rainy season or early autumn to see the falls at their fullest.
Bring a picnic and warm clothes; the shade is cool even on sunny days.
Getting there
Los Cazos is about 5 to 10 minutes south of Mazamitla's center by car, or a walk of roughly half an hour. Follow the signs for Los Cazos and El Salto from town. Access to the falls and the garden is usually through private land, and an entrance fee is normally charged; check hours locally.
