Town 27 km north of Mazamitla
The nearest town on Lake Chapala's south shore, down from the sierra, with a lakeside beach area and wide views of the water.
Tizapán El Alto is a town on the south shore of Lake Chapala, at the foot of the mountains below Mazamitla. Coming down from the cool pine forest of the Sierra del Tigre to the warm lakeshore takes well under an hour, and the change of landscape is a big part of the trip. Its name comes from Nahuatl and is usually translated as river of chalk.
The parish of San Francisco de Asís, begun in 1870, stands at the center, and the town keeps a busy calendar of fiestas, including San Francisco from late September to October 4 and a bullfighting fair at the end of January. Along the river there is a linear park and picnic areas, and the ruins of the Hacienda San Francisco, an old sugar mill, sit on the edge of town.
For views, locals climb the Cerrito de la Cruz north of town, which looks out over the lake, or take the dirt road south to the small village of El Molino for a wide view back over Tizapán and the water.
