About Tuxcueca

Tuxcueca is the seat of the municipality of the same name, on the south shore of Lake Chapala, at about 1,530 metres above sea level. At the 2020 census the town had 1,424 inhabitants and the municipality 6,702; the municipality's largest settlement is San Luis Soyatlán, also on the lake. The name comes from the Nahuatl tochcuécan, from tochtli (rabbit), cuéitl (skirt) and can (place), and has been read as "where rabbit-hair skirts are made".

The settlement already existed before the conquest, founded by Chichimec peoples beside the Las Carretas stream. After the south of Jalisco fell in 1524 it came under the Province of Ávalos, and in 1560 the town was moved 2 km west of the original site for its Spanish foundation. It became a municipality on 20 April 1886 by decree 184, pushed by General Ramón Corona, born in nearby Puruagua, with Gonzalo Solís as the first municipal president.

In the centre the main sights are the church of San Bartolomé Apóstol, from the second half of the 18th century, the chapel of the Virgen de Guadalupe, from 1903, and the former Escuela Normal of 1939, now the public library. The municipality also has a pier, the La Cañada dam and Cerro de García, its highest point. Embroidered cotton cloth and palm hats are made locally.

The bullfighting fair runs 28 January to 5 February; the San Bartolomé fiesta is 15 to 24 August, and the Virgen de Guadalupe fiesta 4 to 12 December.
