About Techaluta de Montenegro
Techaluta de Montenegro is a small town at the northern end of the Laguna de Sayula, in dry, rocky country of volcanic and salty soils. Those hard conditions suit the órgano cactus, and Techaluta is famous across Jalisco for its pitayas, the sweet fruit of that cactus, considered by many to be the best in the region.
The pitayas ripen from about April to June and come in many colors, from red and purple to yellow and white. Pickers cut the fruit from the tall cactus arms in the early morning and sell it in town and along the roads. To celebrate the season, Techaluta holds a pitaya fair from late April to late May, with music, contests, bullfights and sales of pitaya products.
The town has older roots too: a church dedicated to its patron, San Sebastián, whose fiesta falls in mid-January, and the remains of an older church on the site of the earlier town, known locally as the iglesia vieja. The name Montenegro honors Colonel Lauro Montenegro, who fought against the French intervention.
